            Bird Calls of Christmas Island

Bird Calls ofChristmas Island is a tropical paradise in the Indian Ocean situated 1800 kilometres west of Darwin and
500 kilometres south of Jakarta, Indonesia, Latitude 10.30’S, Longitude 105.40’E. The island is 135 sq
kms of which 63% is National Park. The island is the tip of an undersea volcano of Everest proportions,
which emerged from the ocean over 60 million years ago. Christmas Island has a sheer rocky coastline
and much of it is covered by a dense canopy of tropical rainforest

The CD includes 6 endemic species: Christmas Island Imperial Pigeon, Linchi Swiftlet, Christmas Island
Frigatebird, Abbott’s Booby, Christmas Island Hawk-Owl and Christmas Island White-eye. Other species
of interest are White-tailed Tropicbird, Savanna Nightjar, Red-footed Booby, Variable Goshawk, White-
breasted Waterhen and Asian Koel. This presentation of calls of birds of Christmas Island provides a
comprehensive record of the sounds of many of the species that are known to occur on Christmas
Island. Where possible, a variety of calls of each species are presented. This makes the listener aware of
the repertoire of sounds many of the birds possess.

This album has no music or spoken commentary. The natural calls of the birds of this region can be
appreciated both as a source of pleasant sounds, or as a well documented reference library of many of
Christmas Island bird species. A list of the species, with call description and behaviour notes, can be
found inside the cover. For those people with a particular interest in any of the calls, further information
can be obtained from the author.
